We keep what your account needs to work on every device, and nothing more. We do not sell it, and there are no ads.
This page says what is stored, where, who else your device talks to, and how to have it deleted.
Who is responsible
Marten is made by Rasmus Martinsson in Sweden, who is the data controller for the account service. Write to support@getmarten.app with any question about your data.
What your Marten account stores
- Your email address and password. The password is handled by the sign-in service and is never visible to us.
- If you turn on two-step verification, the key your authenticator app uses to make codes. The sign-in service keeps it and uses it only to check the code you type.
- Your library: the titles you save, how far you got in each, and what you have watched.
- Your profiles: their names, and a PIN in hashed form if you set one.
- The addresses of the add-ons you add, and how Home is arranged.
- The app's settings and the collections you make.
- Once a day, a short note from the app about how syncing is going: the app and system version, when it last synced, and how many changes are waiting. It holds no titles and nothing about what you watch. It lets us see why a library is out of date when you ask for help.
This is stored so that the same account reads the same on every device you sign in on, and so that we can help you when something does not sync. It is used for nothing else.
When you sign in an Apple TV with a code shown on the screen, that code is kept for ten minutes at most. To stop anyone from asking for codes in bulk, a scrambled form of the address a request came from, one that cannot be turned back into the address, is kept as well. It stops counting after ten minutes and is deleted soon after.
Where it is kept
The account service runs on Google's Firebase: Firebase Authentication for sign-in, and Cloud Firestore, in Google's European region, for the rest. Google processes the data on our behalf under its data processing terms. Each account can read only its own data.
Who else your device talks to
Marten fetches what it shows from other services, and those services see your device's IP address and what it asks for:
- The add-ons you add. They are run by others, and their own terms and privacy policies apply. Marten ships none.
- Services for titles, artwork, subtitles and intro markers that the app uses to fill in details pages, such as Cinemeta, Metahub and IntroDB.
- GitHub and getmarten.app, when the Mac app checks for updates (on by default), and when you install a badge pack from Settings.
- TMDB and MDBList, only if you enter your own key for them in Settings.
- Stremio, only if you choose to import from a Stremio account. Your Stremio password is used once for the import and is not stored.
What we don’t do
No advertising, no tracking across apps or sites, no selling or sharing of your data. This website sets no cookies and runs no analytics. When you sign in on the website it keeps your sign-in in the browser tab, so you stay signed in as you move between pages, until you sign out or close the tab. Nothing about that is kept on our side.
How long it is kept, and deleting it
Your data is kept for as long as you have an account. You can delete the account and everything in it yourself, at any time: see Delete your account.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask to see the data we hold about you, have it corrected, have it deleted, or receive a copy of it. Write to support@getmarten.app from the address on your account. You can also complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY).
